Writing Toolkit Institute: Using Writing Toolkits and Learning Progressions to Support Writing Conferring and Small Group Work
After the enormous popularity of last year’s Reading Toolkit Institute, we are excited to introduce this new institute! This institute glories in the use and creation of toolkits to support conferring and small group work in writing. We define toolkits broadly to include the collection of charts, exemplars, mentor texts, demonstration writing, practice materials and a score of other tools with which you can be prepared to teach responsively.
There will be an emphasis on performance assessments and learning progressions that inform your instruction and your toolkits. You’ll ask: How can we help children study mentor texts at different levels and set goals for their own writing work? How can we support students’ growth with conventions as well as with craft and structure? This institute will help you answer these questions and more.
Most importantly, we’ll help you consider the many ways you can help students remain on a steady trajectory of growth using goals, personal charts, checklists, rubrics, and the like, so growth continues when they don’t have you alongside.
We’ve found that simple tools—Post-its, whiteboards, iPads, and above all, the content of your own writing— can turn the work over to kids in the most joyous ways imaginable. You’ll hear about ways to put tools into students’ hands and teach them to use these with increasing independence. The presenters will show you how you can create and use state of the art teaching tools that are responsive and developmentally appropriate. You will see pictures and examples galore to spur your imagination and will then create your own tools for use in your school.
